The local CBS station contacted us recently to discuss how you, as a consumer, can properly vet a company that will get the job done right and honestly. The Better Business Bureau offers the following advice when selecting a company for winter heating maintenance:
- Ask if technicians are salaried or on commission. Commissioned employees are more apt to sell you things you do not need.
- Note that all contracts can legally be canceled within three days as long as they are signed in your home.
- New energy-efficient units may get you tax credit.
- And remember — many warranties require you to schedule yearly maintenance. That maintenance may be worth it, as some systems last 20 years.

John says, “Beware of the $49 tune-up.” He says a contractor interviewed for an industry publication readily admitted these tune-ups were a loss leader, but said they typically attracted customers with older equipment that hadn’t been served in many years and needed repairs. A customer could initially call for a $49 tune-up and end up with a bill for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. They also use these tune-ups as a marketing tactic. Companies will often add their company sticker to all your equipment so you are sure to call them when you do have a problem.
